APA Wants to Hear from You!

We had a fantastic intermediate class today in the studio. After the class, we asked the students for some feedback on the day.

“Terrific class, Richard. Picked up some great little gems! Enjoyed the informal class style with Q&A and slide show + going outside to practice.”

-Julie Williams

“This class has let me take the time out of my busy schedule to devote the time I wanted to to photography. I have learned more in three hours than I have reading plenty of “how to” books. Great class overall!”

-Milena

If you’ve taken an APA class and would like to give us your feedback please email us! We love to hear from all our students!

Photo Tip of the Week: Use Your Motor Drive!

Use your motor drive. The motor drive is also known as “the poor man’s tripod.” True enough. If you fire off five shots with the motor drive, at least one of them should be sharper than the rest, for lots of reasons. The motion of pushing the shutter often blurs the first frame but the second and third frames are much sharper. Or it could be just random luck with one frame coming at a steadier moment. With a subject that is moving, your camera’s motor drive gives you better odds of capturing a sharp shot.

Photo Tip of the Week: Panning to Stop Motion

Moving with your subject to stop motion seems like an oxymoron, but it is in fact an incredibly useful technique to create interesting images. In order to do so effectively, you must keep a few key things in mind:

- Panning works when you move the camera in perfect motion with the subject. It’s not enough to just swing the camera from side to side. You have to move it in sync with your subject.

-Choose the right subject. It is easier to pan with a fast-moving subject than a slow one.

-Use Manual Exposure or Shutter Priority metering. You don’t want the shutter speed to change while you are shooting.

- Pick a good shutter speed. The longer the shutter speed, the more blurred the background will be. A long shutter speed will make your subject pop out from the background, and that is good. But the longer the shutter speed, the more difficult it is to get the subject reasonably sharp. **Try anything between 1/8 and 1/60 of a second**

- Find the right background. The background must have some detail in order to produce the pleasing streaks you are looking for. That is why the jet is a bad subject for panning when it is up against a plain blue sky. Pan all you want but the sky will still be a featureless blue. Nothing will look as if it “moved.” On the other hand, backgrounds with too much contrast will often make bad backgrounds for panning.

- Use the viewfinder correctly. The best trick is to find a focusing mark in your viewfinder and put it on your moving subject. Now, try to keep that point perfectly aligned with your subject.

Photo Tip of the Week: Portrait Lighting

Basic portraits can sometimes seem a bit dull and mundane. A great way to make portraits interesting is to play around with the type of lighting used. Here are three different types of lighting that will produce three very different looks.

1. Front Light:
Place your subject facing the light. Shoot facing your subject with your back to the light. The light will brightly illuminate your subject, bringing out stunning catchlights. Take note: if the light is too bright for your subjects eyes, simply have them close thier eyes until you are ready to snap the shot – and make that moment count.

2. Side Light:
Turn your subject so that only one shoulder is facing the light. Then turn thier face 3/4 degrees into the light. This side angle will give you soft transfer edges between the highlights and shadows. This lighting will also add depth to your portrait. Shoot facing your subjects lit shoulder.

3. Back Light:
For a more unique and artistic shot, place your subject with thier back to the setting sun. On Manual mode, overexpose the portrait so your subject is evenly lit. Remember this will cause your background to be overexposed and your highlights will be blown out.
